Welcome to our literacy corner dedicated to nurturing early childhood literacy, where we believe that every child's journey to literacy should be as unique and supported as they are. My name is Samantha Woodley, and as a mother of three, teacher and program director, I've navigated the complexities and joys of early childhood education both personally and professionally. My youngest child was born with a birth defect affecting his hearing and speech, which propelled me into a world of learning and advocacy. Working closely with a remarkable medical team since birth, including a speech pathologist, I embraced the challenge of ensuring his developmental needs were met, which sparked my passion for early childhood literacy.
With a longstanding dream of becoming a kindergarten teacher and need to know more so I could help my child, I began volunteering in my daughter's classroom, absorbing insights into early childhood education. This hands-on experience expanded when I became an Educational Assistant, where I worked with children facing speech delays and non-verbal challenges. Through collaboration with teachers and speech pathologists, I gained invaluable knowledge in language development and literacy. Inspired by my experiences and driven by a desire for inclusive education, I co-founded a playschool with a diverse board, focusing on a comprehensive program that supports all learners. My ongoing commitment to professional development, including an ECE certificate and soon-to-be diploma, where I studied Early Literacy further, underscores my dedication to fostering literacy and development in young children. I invite you to explore our resources and join us in creating a supportive and enriching learning environment for every child.
Early literacy is like the starter pack for young children to dive into the world of reading and writing. It’s not just about figuring out how to string letters into words; it’s a fun and dynamic way of learning that includes storytelling, playing with sounds, and getting creative with scribbles. Think of it as building a tool set with vocabulary, phonemic awareness, and letter recognition. These skills help kids understand the language around them and communicate their ideas. It’s like setting the stage for a lifetime of learning, where kids can decode language, think on their feet, and express themselves clearly as they grow. Early literacy is more than just an education milestone; it’s a vibrant journey into the wonders of words and communication!
